The technology app bought by Facebook in mid-2012 has moved to make money through photo sharing service by inserting advertisements. Instagram began displaying ads last weekend from the smartphone photo sharing service it bought in a billion-dollar deal last year.
The first ad to pop up was a sponsored photo of a Michael Kors ladies’ watch, artfully displayed on a table set elegantly for coffee and biscuits according to Journal.ie article published a few days ago.
Instagram has about 150 million active users and it is opening roster of advertisers included Adidas, Lexus, PayPal, Burberry and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The world’s leading online social network reported profit of $425 million in the quarter that ended on September 30, compared with a loss a year earlier.
The potential for Instagram, which Facebook ultimately purchased for a little over $700 million in cash and stock, is huge, notes Citi analyst Mark May, who rates Facebook “buy” with a $57 price target. He ultimately believes Facebook could be worth $70, with advertising from Instagram account for $3 per share according to Nasdaq.com
